Alan Johnson is under huge pressure to ‘pluck up the courage’ to save Gary McKinnon after judges warned he might kill himself if extradited.

They ruled they could not stop the Government from sending him to the U.S., where the vulnerable Asperger’s sufferer faces up to 60 years behind bars.

But the two High Court judges declared in a pointed statement that, if extradited, ‘his mental health will suffer and there are risks of worse, including suicide’.

Crucially, the judges also said the 43-year-old computer hacker could be prosecuted in London – a process which would automatically halt extradition.

Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, said: ‘The succession of government ministers who have let this sorry saga drag on for seven long years should bow their heads in shame.

‘It is time for Alan Johnson to pluck up the courage and ensure that Gary McKinnon is tried in a British court. Nothing else will do.’

Shuttle returns from 16-day mission

Space shuttle Endeavour and its seven astronauts have returned to Earth after a 16-day mission to boost the size and power of the international space station.

Endeavour’s smooth and punctual arrival, after more than two weeks in orbit, sparked an ecstatic reception for Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese astronaut to return from a long space journey.

His space station mission lasted four and a half months.

At his request, sushi awaited him. But it was more than Wakata had anticipated – he was swamped with sushi as Kennedy Space Centre workers dropped off the delicacy for him at crew quarters.

Wakata was greeted by the president of the Japanese Space Agency, who said the astronaut would be accommodated properly when he returns to Japan in a few months.

"I Touched A Crop-Circle-Making UFO," Says Investigator

Today’s UFO mystery comes to you from Barbury Castle, UK, where two crop circle investigators earlier this summer got kicked out of a cornfield. But then they touched a mysterious craft near the circles. And got it on film!

Over at Earthfiles, Linda Moulton reports that investigators Paul Jones and Andrew Pyrka were checking out a bird-shaped crop circle in June. When an angry farmer kicked them out of his fields, they started to drive away. But then they saw this shiny, orb-like thing floating in a nearby field. Could it have been the author of the crop circle they’d just been investigating? Jones wanted to find out, so he started filming it.

It looks sort of like a mini-helicopter, but matched reports they’d heard from locals about “orbs” that seemed to hang around areas where circles had been laid down. When the shiny thing continued to float in the field, Jones sent Pyrka out to pursue it. But when Pyrka got to the orb he couldn’t see it anymore. Was it just a trick of the light. Staying in cell phone contact with Pyrka, Jones was able to guide him until he was standing precisely under the glowy thing Jones was filming.

Mother of ‘UFO hacker’ asks Obama to stop his extradition to America

The mother of British computer hacker Gary McKinnon today appealed to US President Barack Obama after her son lost his High Court bid to block his extradition.

Janis Sharp spoke of her son’s “heartbreak” at the judges’ decision and urged Mr Obama “to do the right thing”.

Mr McKinnon, 43, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, has asked successive Home Secretaries to block his extradition.

The US authorities say Mr McKinnon carried out the “biggest military hack of all time” when he broke into 97 computers including those of the US Navy and Nasa. He has admitted breaking into the systems in 2001-2 after the 9/11 attacks but claims he was merely looking for evidence of extraterrestrial life.

Standing on the steps of the court, Ms Sharp said: “Stand by us and make this world a better place, a more compassionate place.

“Obama wouldn’t have this. He doesn’t want the first guy extradited for computer misuse to be a guy with Asperger’s, a UFO guy. He wouldn’t want this. I’m just praying, please hear us, Obama, because I know you would do the right thing. I know you would have the strength to stand up and not have this.”

McKinnon lawyers vow to take fight to US Supremes

Lawyers for Gary McKinnon have launched an impassioned attack on the UK justice system, following a decision to allow extradition proceedings against the Pentagon hacker to continue despite his recent diagnosis with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Lord Justice Stanley Burnton and Mr Justice Wilkie dismissed McKinnon’s claims for judicial review on Friday ruling that extradition was “a lawful and proportionate response to his offending”.

The ruling follows review hearings by the judges on whether successive Home Secretaries acted properly in disregarding McKinnon’s recent diagnosis with a mild form of autism in allowing extradition proceedings to continue and, separately, the decision not to prosecute McKinnon in the UK, despite his offer of a signed confession to hacking offences in the UK.

Karen Todner of Kaim Todner, McKinnon’s solicitors, reacted with disappointment to the decision but vowed to fight on.

“The extradition treaty was brought in to facilitate the extradition of terrorists and it must be clear to anyone following the case that Gary McKinnon is no terrorist,” she said.

“The decision to extradite Gary was made by a Secretary of State, Jacqui Smith, who accepts she was not up to the job. David Blunkett, who led us into the flawed Extradition Act now wishes he had not and that Gary was prosecuted in the UK.”

Todner fears for McKinnon’s mental health if he is extradited to face trial and likely imprisonment in the US.

“Why aren’t they stopping the extradition of a man who is clearly vulnerable and who on accepted evidence suffers from Asperger’s? Gary is clearly someone who is not equipped to deal with the American penal system and there is clear evidence he will suffer a mental breakdown if extradited.”

Is this really a UFO over Westbury?

An amateur photographer from Westbury has taken what he describes as ‘a shot in a million’ of a UFO seemingly tracking an RAF plane.

The 56 year-old, from The Butts, Westbury, who wishes to remain anonymous, took this photograph at about 3.45pm on July 22 while in his garden looking towards the Westbury White Horse.

The image shows a Hercules from RAF Lyneham being trailed by a mysterious shape in the background.

The photographer said: “I don’t believe in things from outer space – I think that kind of thing is ludicrous – but that thing was definitely tracking the plane.

“My neighbour was in the garden at the time and I wanted to shout to them, but I didn’t want to say ‘there’s a flying saucer in the sky’ so I didn’t say anything in the end.

“I thought at the time this is too good to be true and I didn’t think it would come out as good as it has. If I was to say it was a shot in a million I don’t think I’d be exaggerating.

Hacker loses bid to avoid US extradition

LONDON — A Brit accused of hacking into US military and NASA computers on Friday lost his latest legal bid to avoid extradition to the United States.

Gary McKinnon, who suffers from a form of autism, could spend life in prison if convicted by a US court of gaining access to 97 computers in 2001 and 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The 43-year-old, who now has 28 days to decide whether to appeal, says he was only looking for evidence of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) when he hacked into the US Navy and NASA space agency computers.

But the High Court on Friday rejected his lawyers’ application for a judicial review of a decision last October by then home secretary Jacqui Smith to order his extradition.

“We are heartbroken. If the law says it’s fair to destroy someone’s life in this way then it’s a bad law,” said his mother Janis Sharp, standing outside the court after the ruling.

His lawyers had argued that he should not be extradited because he suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, and could commit suicide or suffer psychosis if extradited.
