Although kept a secret by NASA for many years, Buzz Aldrin has unequivocally stated that the astronauts in the spacecraft spotted a UFO flying near them. Nervous about broadcasting their sighting openly, the astronauts tried to casually ask Mission Control if a piece they had jettisoned earlier was nearby, but NASA confirmed it was not.

Buzz Aldrin explained:

“There was something out there, close enough to be observed, and what could it be? Now, obviously the three of us weren’t going to blurt out, ‘Hey, Houston, we’ve got something moving alongside of us and we don’t know what it is, you know?’”

Nearly 40 years to the day after Neil Armstrong became the first man on the Moon, British ­astronomers played previously lost tapes of the milestone event.

It shows how their predecessors listened in amazement as an unmanned Russian spacecraft crash-landed on the Moon just a few hours before Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were due to leave the surface.

At one point one of the British astronomers says with classic understatement: “I say, this has really been drama of the highest order.”

The recordings were made at Cheshire’s Jodrell Bank Observatory in July 1969 when Sir ­Bernard Lovell and his team were ­listening to ­transmissions from the Moon.

The tapes were lost in the archives until they started researching material to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the landings.

The British astronomers were tracking the American Eagle Lander and an unmanned Soviet spacecraft Luna 15.

It was trying to land on the Moon to collect samples of lunar soil and then return to Earth in a bid to scoop the US Apollo 11 mission.
